New wave is a rock music genre that emerged in the late 1970s alongside punk rock. The term "new wave" encompasses various rock and pop oriented music styles. It was considered synonymous with punk rock with electronic instrumentation and commercial leanings before it became a musical style and popular movement throughout the 1980s, with a colorful and lively (sometimes futuristic) aesthetic that incorporated elements of punk, electronics, disco. and pop.

Like psychedelic rock in the 60s and disco music in the 70s, new wave defined and influenced the entire pop culture of the 80s. Common characteristics of new wave music include the constant use of keyboards, electronic productions and a distinctive visual style in music and fashion videos.

It was the most popular and influential music genre in the world in the 1980s until the early 1990s. Its dancing sound, cheerful and rocked by colored neon lights came to define and influence various styles such as fashion, film and television. Its aesthetics and extensive use of keyboards and synthesizers came to be equated with other electronic genres that became popular in the 1980s, such as dance-pop and synth-pop.

In the 2000s there were some revivals and in the 2010s, many new wave bands (many of them linked to indie) emerged and became popular in the underground music scene and on the internet, mainly on YouTube.

The new wave strongly influenced other musical genres. The strong and at the same time soft drum beat (often electronic), the use of synthesizers and keyboards and the futuristic, colorful and extravagant style influenced pop music, glam metal, among other genres that became popular in the 1980s. In fashion, everything was very colorful and extravagant, women used a lot of colors, strong eyeshadows and brightly colored lipstick, always in the exotic and eye-catching line. Accessories could not be left out of futuristic fashion, acrylic and plastic came in high, in the most varied colors, usually sparkling.

For having a look of the future and a low cost, bracelets, earrings and necklaces made of this material were the great sensation. The haircuts were in line with the hairstyles of new wave artists. Androgyny and the new romantic movement were very popular in the 80's and had a strong influence from the new wave.

AMG explains that the new wave's style diversity came about because the genre "retained the same vigor and irreverence as punk, as well as a fascination with electronics, futurism, fashion and art." This diversity has extended to the diverse musicians and bands of one hit wonders that have emerged across the genre.

The emergence of MTV was also critical to the success of New Wave. Through it, the bands realized the importance of music videos and the station broadcast almost exclusively clips from New Wave bands until 1987, which was also responsible for promoting New Wave fashion through The B-52s' extravagant hair and brightly colored clothes. and the futuristic look of Devo.

In New Wave fashion, sportswear is starting to be used on the streets. Lycra sneakers, sweatshirts and pants are adapted for urban use. Accessories are exaggerated, colorful and usually made of acrylic, which was an inexpensive material at the time.

In Brazil, the term New Wave was not widespread, although the style, fashion and music of the 1980s followed world trends. Brazilian New Wave bands did not follow so much American or English trends, which despite the synthesizers, were more classic rock with regional influences. Then came the bands "Rock Brasil" such as RPM, Metrô, Blitz, Gang 90, Camisa de Vênus, Legião Urbana, Titãs, Ira, Os Paralamas do Sucesso, Kid Abelha, Barão Vermelho.
